For sun lovers Lake Malawi offers the perfect base to kayak, dive, snorkel and join sailing adventures and the long dry season is ideal for hiking the mountains and horse riding across the plateaus. Even during the rains Malawi’s green lush landscape is ideal for birding enthusiasts and a quick hop over to Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park provides incredible green season wildlife viewing.
The top adventure activity in Malawi is diving in the beautiful fresh water lake. With more species of fish than in all the great lakes of America, Lake Malawi is a scuba divers heaven. The fresh water is an ideal breeding ground for thousands of species of brightly coloured Cyclid Fish. These territorial species dart in and out of the rocky outcrops and can be best seen from either Likoma or Mumbo Island. Diving courses are available for the less experienced and two great diving schools are based at the popular backpacker spots of Cape Maclear and Nkhata Bay. Tag on a kayaking trip to your diving adventure and explore some of the lesser known islands, our favourite being the Robinson Crusoe island of Domwe.
Central Africa’s largest free-standing mountain towers over Southern Malawi and is an ideal base for a weeks trek. Mount Mulanje has trails for beginners and rock faces for the more experienced. With 21 peaks there is something for everyone! Basic mountain huts are dotted across the plateau making a 4- 5 day trek interspersed with a few peak climbs the best way to enjoy the mountain. Some of our favourite experiences on Mulanje have been swimming in the natural rock pools and eating dinner round the camp fire in the evening. Expert local guides and porters are a must as the weather can change very quickly on the mountain. Climbing between May and September temperatures can drop below zero so take plenty of layers and always take a guide however experienced you are.
Malawi is affectionately known as The Warm Heart of Africa and your adventure holiday will be defined by the wonderful local people that you meet along the way. Whether it is your mountain guide, diving instructor or the man selling mangoes along the roadside, Malawians are enormously friendly and welcoming. To truly experience Malawi we would suggest visiting a local community, playing a game of village football and making some lifelong friends!
The Responsible Safari Company offer all the above and more! For all your adventure travel needs in Malawi and beyond contact The Responsible Safari Co. – offering more adventure, more local insight and more unforgettable memories!
