DESTINATION ADVENTURE HOLIDAY GUIDE
Scotland
Page sponsored by Wild Scotland
Famous for its history and culture, Scotland is also a land of wildlife, wide open spaces and warm welcomes. The country’s small size and varied landscapes makes it one the best places in Europe for outdoor activities, be it walking, climbing, canoeing, canyoning, sea-kayaking, skiing and much more.
From the sea to mountain summit there are outdoor adventures for everyone. Our hills and mountains are accessible to people of all abilities and with 284 Munros (mountains of 3,000ft+) in Scotland, you are spoiled for choice. Glencoe and Ben Nevis are perhaps two of the most well-known, Ben Nevis being the highest mountain in the United Kingdom and Glencoe perhaps one of the most dramatic. Our lowland walks and long distance trails offer equally spectacular scenery. Popular treks are the West Highland Way, the Southern Upland Way and the Great Glen Way along famous Loch Ness (keep an eye out for the monster!).
During the summer months our coast with its sheltered lochs and uninhabited islands offer some of the best sea-kayaking in the world and surfers from all over the world head to the Thurso Reef on the north coast for some great waves. Scotland’s lochs and rivers offer great canoeing, whether paddling down class 4 or 5 rapids, canyoning or relaxing in a Canadian canoe.
There are plenty of guides and outfitters who will help you enjoy your adventure safely by providing you with the very best equipment and tuition. Check out Wild Scotland’s websites for the best companies. If you’re heading out on your own, make sure that you are properly prepared and have told someone where you’re heading. You wouldn’t want to miss out on your tot of whisky at the end of the evening now, would you? Slainte!*

- Popped in to Ratho last night. It's set in an old quarry and you can still see bolts on the rock from before they built the arena.

It was awesome. Huge walls, all different levels of climbing. There wasn't too many people either, which always seems to make it easier when you're trying new, hard climbs. I would recommend this to anyone, no matter what your level of experience!..

Edinburgh Indoor Climbing Arena : Ratho
- I went to Alien Rock 2 for the first time the other day. It's a good venue with an array of different climbs.

It also has several different gradients of wall with varying angles from leaning forward to up side down. My only major criticism of the place is the huge amount of people there. Quite difficult to get into it with crowds in your landing zone!!..

Alien Rock Indoor Climbing
- Visited Caingorm Mountain over the Christmas period and enjoyed a great day's skiing. I was sceptical, and whilst it doesn't compare to the scale of most overseas resorts, I was surprised but the quality of the skiing would recommend a trip to anyone who hasn't skied in Scotland before.

Alien Rock Indoor Climbing
- We went on the canoeing river trip- we were dropped off up river and paddled back down to the Loch. The trip took us about 5 hours, including a stop for lunch, and was fairly sedate.

The Hub - Glentress Forest
- Bike hire was perhaps a little on the pricey side, but the bikes were all top quality konas, which were in top condition and staff were friendly and helpful so cant complain really. All well maintained trails, with varying levels of difficulty.

We hit up the blue trails which are intermediate but still supply some fun tight turns, dips and jumps. Nice cafe for tea and cakes afterwards!..
